Caraway was not used in our home when I was growing up. Licorice is not something that I’m usually attracted to, so I was hesitant to even try it as an adult. I think it would be more accurate to say that caraway is a rather soothing mixture of fennel, anise and licorice. This difference was attractive when I smelled it, and it is quite enjoyable to taste.
Caraway is grown all over Europe, North Africa and Asia as a medicinal and culinary herb. It is loaded with vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants. Caraway addresses all kinds of stomach issues. It is soothing to indigestion, gas, stomachache and digestive cramps. It is healing to ulcers. It is helpful to stress and calming to the entire digestive tract. It also helps move food more quickly through the digestive tract; as it stimulates the production of enzymes and bile that are needed to efficiently digest food.
Caraway has been shown to bind toxins from food, which helps protect the digestive mucus membrane, and has anecdotally been shown to prevent some digestive cancers.
Caraway improves cardiovascular health and can strengthen the heart, lower cholesterol; helps prevent hardening of the arteries, and lowers blood pressure.
Traditionally, Caraway has been used for bruises, infant colic and children’s stomachache. It is helpful rubbed on the lower abdomen for menstrual cramps. It also increases breast-milk production in nursing mothers.
Recipes:
For Infant Colic or Increasing milk production: place 1 drop in 1/2 teaspoon of carrier oil (organic cold pressed olive oil or organic coconut oil)and apply to the colicky belly in small, gentle clockwise circles. The same recipe may be applied to the breasts of a nursing mother 1/2 hour before nursing (to increase milk production). This will be helpful to the infant’s digestion as well.
Natural Cleaner:
You can add 5 drops of Caraway to 1/4 cup of vinegar and 4 cups water for a natural disinfectant.
Stomach Upset, Gas, Indigestion or Stomach Cramps: Place 1 or 2 drops of caraway in 8 ounces of water and drink as needed. Be mindful to pay attention if this becomes a habit. It means that there is something more going on in your body that requires attention. See a health practitioner for guidance.
Ulcer Prevention or as a Heart Tonic:
Place 1 or 2 drops of caraway in 8 ounces of water and drink 1 or 2x daily over a period of 1-3 months in conjunction with diet changes to heal ulcers. May be taken for longer periods of time to strengthen the heart.
Hiccups:
Drink 1 drop of caraway in a 4 ounces of water to cure hiccups, which is a spasm of the diaphragm. Or rub 2 drops of caraway in 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil or coconut oil on the diaphragm to calm the spasms as well.
Kidney Health:
1-2 drops of caraway in 8 ounces of water will also help the kidneys flush as it is a mild diuretic. Taken over a period of time, it can also support weight loss.
